The Jackson, Michigan 2022 Southside Festival Series Authors & Writers Expo

The 2022 Southside Festival Series Authors & Writers Expo is in the books. The Expo proved to be a great showcase for a lot of the creative writing talent in and around Jackson, Michigan. Although there wasn't a large crowd, a steady amount of people came to peruse the offerings, chat with local authors and drink in the ambience. The event had several great sponsors and helped introduce some impressive writers to the community.

I had a great time at this event. Though I am reticent and uncomfortable talking about myself and fit the cliché of the “introverted writer” very well, this was a memorable and fun experience. I met some exceptional people, both writers and book readers, and came away with a better understanding of how a Book Expo operates.

It was wonderful to meet new people and to greet friends, old and new, who dropped in to meet this fine  sampling of the local writing community. Two particular treats were in store for me. One of my oldest, dearest friends in Jackson was the first to visit my booth and took some pictures for me. Pam Bond is truly a unique and outstanding woman who has helped me with many creative projects. Not long after, the nonpareil James H. Lewis, one of the first friends I made in Michigan after moving here from Massachusetts, stopped by for a long “catch-up” conversation.

This event was less about selling books than it was focused on exposure. And to that end it was a success. The City of Jackson and surrounding areas is infused with very talented writers, some of which were on hand to talk about their work and sign books. It was exciting to hear them speak with passion about their work and how much heart they put into their words.

Special thanks to Hakim Nathaniel Crampton, Myeshia Jones and Salena Taylor for making this event so enjoyable and successful. My apologies to those many other people who were such a big part of this event whose names I did not acquire.

This event will continue to grow and more writers will attend future Book Expos. For me, this was a unique and very rewarding experience.
