Do wolves experience human-like emotions?

Studies have proven that animals are able to experience a lot of the same emotions that humans can. While their emotions are likely more basic, that could make them all the more focused, intense and powerful.

Wolves that have lost their mate have long been observed howling in despair. It's as if they are calling out to their lost mate, hopeful that somehow their call will be answered. Humans who have lost someone they love often act in a similar manner. Humans talk to their departed loved one, perhaps really to themselves, but it is an expression of need and an outpouring of grief.

In the short story “No Place For Mercy” in my anthology of the same name, the protagonist is a wolf whose mate has been killed by human hunters who surprised him and his wolf pack.

Chased and fired upon, the heartbroken leader of his pack has led them on a desperate, non-stop flight to escape slaughter. Determined to exterminate these wolves, the hunters ruthlessly pursue them far into the north.

Too far.

At the edge of their endurance, the human hunters must finally stop. Though exhausted, the wolf pack leader wants to end the chase to protect his pack. And he wants something more personal: revenge.

Revenge against those who killed his life mate.
