SCREENPLAY INTO NOVEL: THE JOURNEY BEGINS

This is the first time I've taken a screenplay idea and wrote a novel from it.

The process was at times frustrating and humbling, but in the end it gave me a profound sense of fulfillment. Writing a novel isn't easy. It takes a long time to develop a screenplay into a novel, but the fact that the screenplay outline is a completed story helps immeasurably.

There is a freedom in novel-writing that is absent from writing a screenplay. The form is less restrictive, and if you publish in the traditional manner or self-publish, there is a sense of accomplishment in knowing that your project, your great characters, plot and the story world you took so much time developing and refining, is not going to die on the vine. It won't languish unknown because no one wants to take a chance producing a film from a screenplay penned by an unknown writer.

In writing a novel, you have complete control and the limitations are only what you place on yourself. You have a free hand to fully flesh-out characters and describe motivations and the story world itself.

Do I use too much description? Not enough? There's no need to worry about how a potential director or producer will feel about it. The writer of a novel is truly the king or queen and his/her decision is absolute. It feels wonderful not having to care about these things. To know that you are the God of your story world and can do with it whatever you please.

I have a sequel planned to "The Last Angel To Fall," and I've decided to turn some of my other completed screenplays, two that were Finalists in international competitions, into novels.

I'm really enjoying novel-writing. If your efforts to successfully market your screenplay have left you frustrated, I strongly recommend that you consider writing a novel instead. You will own that all-important IP (intellectual property) that studios crave. If your novel is successful, the industry will be coming to you.

My first novel is now available on Amazon as a Kindle e-book for the special price of 99 cents for 24 hours only:

The novel is also available in paperback, but without discount.
